Relative Adverbs

What are relative adverbs?

Relative adverbs can introduce a clause that gives more information about a place, destination, or time.

Location and direction

and both correspond to where in English, which can make the distinction tricky for English speakers. Swedish distinguishes between location () and movement towards a destination ().

Det där är huset där jag växte upp. That is the house where I grew up.Vi gick dit ljudet kom ifrån.We went to where the sound was coming from.

Time

and can introduce clauses referring to time. They can specify when something happens or give more information about a time already mentioned.

Ring mig när du kommer hem.Call me when you get home.Jag minns dagen då vi träffades för första gången.I remember the day when we met for the first time.
