Swedish Personal Pronouns
Personal pronouns replace nouns when it is already clear who or what we are talking about.
Swedish personal pronouns have a subject form and an object form.
| English | Subject | Object |
|---|---|---|
| I / me | jag | mig |
| you | du | dig |
| he / him | han | honom |
| she / her | hon | henne |
| it (en word) | den | den |
| it (ett word) | det | det |
| we / us | vi | oss |
| you (plural) | ni | er |
| they / them | de | dem |
De and dem both turn into dom in every-day speech.
Subject
The subject form is used for the person or thing that is the subject of the sentence.
Jag ser henne.I see her.
Han dricker mjölk.He drinks milk.
Det is used as a general or formal subject in sentences where there is really nothing performing the action:
Det snöar.It is snowing.
Here, det does not refer to anything in particular. It simply fills the subject position required by the sentence.
Object
The object form is used for the person or thing affected by the action.
Hon ser mig.She sees me.
Han kysser henne.He kisses her.
It is also used for the person receiving something.
Du gav mig boken. You gave me the book.
And after prepositions.
Jag pratar med henne.I am talking to her.
Den and det
When referring back to things, den is used for en words and det for ett words.
Huset är nytt. Det är stort. The house is new. It is big.
Boken är där. Ge mig den.The book is there. Give it to me.
