What are indefinite pronouns?
Indefinite pronouns refer to people, things, or quantities without identifying anything or anyone specifically. They can also express broader or general ideas.
Någon, något and några
Någon, något, and några can mean some or any. The form depends on gender and number.
Jag såg någon konstig låda.I saw some strange box.
Vill du spela något spel?Do you want to play a game?
Han köpte några böcker.He bought some books.
Någon can also mean someone, while något can mean something.
Är det någon här?Is anyone here?
Vill du ha något att dricka?Would you like something to drink?
Någon, något, and några are especially common in questions: Har du någon penna?(Do you have a pen?)
Ingen, inget and inga
Ingen, inget, and inga express absence and correspond to no or not any depending on the context.
Jag har ingen bil.I do not have a car.
Det är inget problem.It is no problem.
Vi har inga pengar.We have no money.
When used without a noun, ingen can mean nobody, and inget can mean nothing.
Det var inget.It was nothing.
Det kom ingen på kalaset.Nobody came to the party.
All, allt and alla
All, allt, and alla express totality.
Vi har inte all tid i världen!We do not have all the time in the world!
Alla elever är här.All the students are here.
Allt är klart.Everything is ready.
When used without a noun, alla can mean everybody and allt can mean everything.
Varje
Varje means every and is followed by a singular noun. It does not need to agree with gender or number.
Hon tränar varje dag.She exercises every day.
I varje hus och hem.In every house and home.
Many, much, few and little
Swedish distinguishes between number and amount:
