What are degree adverbs?

Degree adverbs tell us how much or to what degree something has a particular quality. They often come before an adjective or another adverb.

High degree

Words such as mycket and väldigt express a high degree.

Filmen var väldigt bra.The film was very good.

Det är mycket viktigt.It is very important.

Medium and low degree

Ganska commonly expresses a medium degree.

Jag är ganska trött.I am quite tired.

Lite can express a lower degree.

Det blev lite fel.It went a little wrong.

Complete and almost complete

Helt can indicate that a quality completely applies.

Glaset är helt tomt.The glass is completely empty.

Nästan means that something comes close to a limit without quite reaching it.

Maten är nästan klar.The food is almost ready.

För expresses that something exceeds an appropriate or expected level and corresponds to too in English.

Kaffet är för varmt.The coffee is too hot.

Den här väskan är för tung.This bag is too heavy.
