Comparison of Adjectives

How to compare adjectives

Swedish adjectives can be compared in three degrees: positive, comparative, and superlative.

Positive

The positive is the basic adjective and isn't used for comparing at all, but is seen as the first degree.

Min pappa är stark. My dad is strong.

Kvällen är magisk. The evening is magical.

Comparative

The comparative form is used to compare two options against each other. When both are mentioned, the comparison can be made visible with the word . The form is usually constructed by adding the ending -(a)re to the word itself or by placing in front of it.

Min pappa är starkare än din pappa. My dad is stronger than your dad.

Kvällen är mer magisk än i går.The evening is more magical than yesterday.

Superlative

The superlative is the highest degree of comparison and usually ends in -(a)st or is preceded by the word .

Men kvällen imorgon blir mest magisk. But tomorrow evening will be the most magical.

Some adjectives change their stem vowel: störrestörst.

There are of course irregular adjectives, where the comparative and superlative forms have to be learned: bättrebäst, sämresämst.
